What is Harmony XL Pro Tattoo removal?
Successful multi-colour tattoo removal requires a high powered laser that can deliver enough energy within the absorption spectrum of a wide range of colours.
Our Harmony XL Pro Q-Switched Nd:YAG 1064 nm laser is ideal for treating darker ink colours (black, blue and green), while the 532 nm wavelength is effective for brighter ink colours (red, orange and yellow). The mechanical Q-Switched effect works by vibrating and breaking down the ink particles in the tattoo. As the area heals, the body’s immune system flushes away the shattered ink particles, causing the tattoo to fade with minimal risk of scarring or hypopigmentation.
What to Expect During your Tattoo Removal Procedure?
We will assess the tattoo during an in-depth consultation and will then either apply a numbing cream or inject local anesthetic around the tattoo to make the procedure more comfortable. The length of treatment depends on the size of the tattoo.
Tattoo removal can be moderately painful however it is a very quick treatment. We usually say that if you were able to have a tattoo, you will be able to handle tattoo removal. A medium or large tattoo can be treated in a matter of minutes.
During treatment, you will feel a hot zapping sensation which will only last while the area is being treated. This can be likened to the sensation of a hot elastic band being snapped against the skin. There may be some heat in the area following treatment, but this will dissipate quickly. Each treatment becomes less painful as we break down the pigment throughout the duration of your course of sessions.
The number of sessions needed to remove the tattoo depends on the size, age and location of the tattoo. Some large tattoos are so big they can’t be covered in one session, thus requiring more appointments. Also, older tattoos are harder to remove as over time the pigment goes deeper within the skin. Keep in mind intervals of 6-8 weeks between sessions are mandatory therefor an 8 session process can take a little bit over a year.
Are there any side effects with Tattoo removal?
Following tattoo removal with Harmony XL Pro ™ you may get some blistering, scabbing, swelling and heat sensation in the treated area. Although this may look worrying it is a normal occurrence with tattoo removal and will disappear. Dry or paraffin gauze dressing or application of Aquaphor or vaseline may be used to cover the area if needed but this is mainly to keep the area safe from clothes rubbing against the area. You should let the area heal and avoid touching it.
In your first few sessions, there will be some frosting. This happens when the cells holding the ink pigment rupture, water is released from the skin and rises to the surface causing the frosting. This is
temporary and can be wiped away gently after treatment. It does not affect your treatment nor is it necessary to have frosting for the treatment to be effective.
You should keep the treated area clean and ensure clothes do not rub against it. You should avoid hot baths or other extremes of temperature for 48 hours. Swimming, sun and sunbeds should be avoided in between treatments and until the area is fully healed and you must not scratch or pick at the skin as this may cause an infection.
